It’s time for another garden update, folks! We’ve been busy this week putting up fences for our beans. We put them side by side because sometimes they will grow up and across and make a little tunnel and it’s neat.
We put the posts up and then stretched fence across them – the same fencing we used to close our garden and backyard area. Since we have 2 acres, this makes it seem like I have a dedicated back yard. I know, sounds weird, but I’m a city girl and when I first moved here, it really bothered me that I couldn’t just “see” our property line. Our property is on Clayton Rd, but behind us is a small suburb – that’s sounds so funny to me: a suburb of the “village” of New Lebanon. How can a village have a burb? Well, it does – go figure.
One of the things I had the most trouble with was the lack of street lights. Like – NONE. There are some when you look towards town, but we have nothing but darkness out here.
I was born and bred in the city, now granted, my family is from Tennessee, but I am used to fences, concrete and asphalt, not grass, weeds and darkness so when I first moved out here, I was TERRIFIED. It was dark. I mean DARK. You can see the stars and hear the peacocks down the road. Not only have I gotten used to it – but I love it. I can sit at my fire pit and listen to crickets and bullfrogs and enjoy the silence.
Our garden is almost done, and when it’s complete I will put up a post listing everything we have planted. Next year, our boxes, fences and retaining pond will already be there, so it won’t be half as much work. Still, getting your hands into the dirt and working so hard that you pass out at night makes for wonderful mornings. You just wake up feeling refreshed. I don’t need a gym membership – I have a yard.
